Town of Cassino, looking South.

Come daybreak, pre-registered artillery and machine gun fire rained down from counterattacking tanks and self-propelled guns of General Rodt's 15th Panzer Division. With little cover, a complete lack of armour support, and the swollen, icy, Rapido river behind them, there was little chance of success. The following night the attack was renewed, but once again there was no armour support by daybreak. The fate of the men was sealed. With the coming of daylight, they too were cut down, and by the evening of January 22 the regiments had virtually ceased to exist. The losses were staggering - 2,100 men were killed, wounded, and missing in 48 hours.

The 36th Texas division would never forgive Mark Clark.
