Allied divisions in position on Snake's Head Ridge were taken by surprise when the bombing actually started. The raid had not been coordinated between the air and ground commands; as a result, the bombing took place two days before the New Zealand Corps was ready to launch their main assault. To top it all off, the weather, far from improving, became much worse - foul weather, flooding, and waterlogged ground slowed the advance considerably.
