It is now known that the Germans had an agreement with the monks to not use the Abbey for military purposes as long as they remained.
The only people killed in the monastery by the bombing were Italian civilians seeking refuge in the abbey. There is no evidence that the bombs dropped on the Monte Cassino monastery that day ever killed any German troops. If fact, there was no evidence that German troops had occupied the abbey at all prior to the controversial Allied bombing.
